‘Chasing the Boogeyman’ by Richard Chizmar has easily become my favorite read of 2021. I COULD NOT put it down! Truth be told, I thought about immediately restarting it. The story is a perfect blend of semi-autobiography, fiction, and true crime-inspired writing style.
‘Chasing the Boogeyman’ is part thrilling story of a serial killer terrorizing a small town and part love letter to the real-life small town where Chizmar grew up. The story is scary, but incredibly wholesome at the same time.
I can see why Stephen King is friends with/writes with Chizmar. They both have an incredible knack for character-building and creating vivid settings, and their writing styles make the prose flow freely and effortlessly, almost as if they are just telling a story to a friend. And of course, I understand just how much work goes into making your work look easy. The pros do it the best, and Chizmar is one of the best.
Needless to say, I’ll be reading Chizmar's other work. I'm now thoroughly a fan.
